Not much else has worked to prompt a serious response to climate change, perhaps direct challenges to self-interest might. There are many climate impacts that render properties uninsurable, will threats to one’s private property be the impetus?https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-18/insurance-costs-rise-amid-climate-change-fire-and-flood-risk/12882084

The Murray Darling Basin Plan has been a dud and many water extracters have guaranteed that it was. I recall reading Claire Miller’s articles for many years in The Age arguing for environmental protection, now I see she’s working for the NSW Irrigators’ Council. Just sayin’.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-17/murray-darling-missing-water-in-floodplains/12887342

It would be breath-taking for the LNP to become champions for change on climate policy as this article suggests and, while I’m hopeful, I remain highly sceptical. They seem committed to a gas-led recovery and the addition of ‘U’ to make CCS into CCUS, into Carbon Capture Use and Storage, is still lipstick on a pig.https://www.theage.com.au/environment/climate-change/what-climate-wars-the-coalition-s-ship-is-changing-tack-20201112-p56e5c.html

To bastardise Margaret Mead, Tony Abbott mightn’t have been thoughtful but he was certainly committed and by himself, he set back our nation at least a decade. His bitter legacy is still being seen.Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. Coal Fitzgibbon was a brake on progressive climate policy. As Dreyfus says, economy v environment is a false dichotomy. Victorian Labor has been very active in assisting the transition from brown coal in the Latrobe Valley. The Hunter needs a similar program, not to save Fitzgibbon but to save the regional economy as we save the environment.https://reneweconomy.com.au/with-fitzgibbon-gone-labor-has-a-chance-to-be-a-climate-leader-94991/

Is it just Mark McGowan and the regular eruptions of sandgroper chauvinism that wants state-based environmental approvals or is there a more general enthusiasm for the states more generally to have more power? And there’s nothing here to say that the ALP is better on these matters than the LNP. For the environment and all who depend upon it, ie every Australian – humans and non-human alike, this could end in tears.https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/nov/10/coalition-prepared-transfer-of-environmental-powers-to-states-months-before-epbc-review-reported
