I’ve just finished a 5 day walking holiday on the Tasmanian east coast’s Maria Island. The Island, with its dispossession and then convict stain, is quite developed and is a great experience but not a wilderness experience. Four years ago we walked for 10 days on Tasmania’s South Coast Track and for 3 consecutive days we did not see another soul. We had that sublime feeling of being inconsequential in the world and we were in wilderness. There’s development and there’s wilderness and they are mutually exclusive.
