I had a poster on the wall of my student share house quoting John Gorton who said ‘we will tolerate dissent as long as it is ineffective’. With activists’ effectiveness at bringing environmental issues into the public debate, it appears that both LNP and ALP state governments have decided that dissent can no longer be tolerated. This is a rather authoritarian approach that should not be tolerated.https://www.crikey.com.au/2022/12/08/bob-brown-violet-coco-arrest-criminalising-climate-protest/

Non-violent civil disobedience has a long and proud tradition in social change. We cut our teeth on the Springbok demonstration against apartheid, we marched in the moratoriums and sat down in city intersections to hold up traffic, we cheered the blockaders on the Franklin River. We contributed to change that we now value. I write this as I see an advertisement for the Santos Tour Downunder. I’ll cheer for Violet Coco.https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/dec/10/violet-coco-is-not-alone-the-climate-activists-facing-jail

This sounds very promising though while it may be a cliche to say that the devil is in the detail, with offsets particularly it really is. Better that offsets were avoided, they are an admission that the project is dodgy. If suitable habitat could be found to replace an area subject to development, the species in question would already be there. An independent EPA, well-funded and advised by the science, is the way to go.https://theconversation.com/our-laws-fail-nature-the-governments-plan-to-overhaul-them-looks-good-but-crucial-detail-is-yet-to-come-196126

This is starting to look good, Minister Plibersek. Good scientists relaying on sound data, working with communities and leading the policy debate on environmental management is hardly a revolutionary idea but it is certainly a good one. Make it even better by funding it to allow a long-term existence rather than relying on philanthropy.https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/dec/07/australia-biodiversity-council-threatened-species-animals-plants-launch-tanya-plibersek

On how many fronts can environmentalists take on the forces of darkness? When the corporate despoilers and their political enablers hold such sway, there’ll be campaigns to win for many years to come. If we are to chalk up wins, we’ll be thanking the activists for them.https://www.vox.com/down-to-earth/2022/12/4/23483960/cop15-biodiversity-conference-montreal-convention-on-biological-diversity

We can expect more of these snow jobs on nuclear energy as the realisation that we have to get out of fossils becomes even more prevalent. And when there’s an increasing call for transparency and integrity in our political system, this LNP shill for the nuclear industry does his party no favours in his duplicity.https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/dec/04/coalition-mps-grassroots-nuclear-power-survey-linked-to-consulting-firm

Of what use is the National Party? The DLP kept the conservatives in power all those years in frustrating the ALP and, with its demise, the Nationals have taken on that role. In pursuing the policies they do, and these are invariably regressive, they are frustrating the entire nation. Their inextricability with the mining industry is a betrayal of not just country people but of us all.
